This article discusses the whys and hows of Facebook Lists for marketing your small business online.

You have tons of friends on Facebook, right? How are you going to keep track of all these people? Yikes! It can get scary, especially when your friend list goes up over 1000. Time to get organized by using Facebook Lists! The more organized you are, the better you will be able to get your message across to your network. A small, well-organized network is more beneficial to you than a large network that’s disorganized and unrelated. While a bit tedious to set-up, Facebook Lists are vital, as they can save you precious time later, and they give you control over who sees what on your Facebook account.

Why Facebook Lists?

Facebook lists have undergone changes each time the Facebook interface changes, so it can get confusing if you don’t keep up with the details of the system. The two main benefits of Facebook Lists are:

Saving Time

Granular Privacy Control

Saving Time

Facebook Friend Lists save you time in a number of ways:

Organize Your Network. Facebook Lists allow you to group people according to variables such as geo-location, relationships (ie: family, high school friends, clients, prospects, vendors).

Keep Track of Network. When all your people are organized into Facebook Lists, you can filter view the Facebook status updates of a particular group (i.e. when you are logged into Facebook and are focusing on business or personal, you can select that particular list and see those status updates only.)

Communicate with List Members. Facebook does not allow you to send a bulk email to everyone on your Friend list, but you can email all the members of a particular list. This is very convenient and saves tons of time as opposed to finding all the people you want to find individually.

Invite List Members to an Event. You cannot invite all your friends to an event with one click. No. You must click on each individual person’s face in a long-drawn out, arduous process. When you have your network divided into lists, however, Facebook gives you the ability to invite the entire list to your event in bulk. Woo Hoo! This process can save you (or your staff) hours of time for each event.

Granular Privacy Control with Facebook Lists

Facebook Lists allow you to use the granular privacy tools of Facebook when posting status updates. (ie: you can choose which lists will receive which posts).

Custom Privacy Settings.
Customize your privacy settings based on lists (You can limit based on list what aspects of your profile your friends can see). Customize your photo album privacy settings so only a particular list can view them

How to Use Facebook Lists

First things first. there is no longer a direct link to access the Facebook Friends. In order to control your Facebook Lists, go to your Facebook Friends page here:

http://www.facebook.com/friends/

The page you reach looks something like this:

How to Create a Facebook List

Some lists are already created for you by Facebook. You have the ability to create up to 100 lists of your own.

Log into your Facebook account.

Click on Account on the right hand side of your screen.

Click Edit Friends.

Click “Create New List

Type in your List Name.

Select the Friends you would like assigned to that list.

Click “Create List.”

Recommendations: Think about the various ways you want to organize your network. List titles may include: Friends, Family, Church, High School, Peers, Prospects, Clients, Vendors, Dallas, USA, Real Estate, Legal, etc…

Adding Friends to a List

There are only two (2) ways to add friends to a list on Facebook. This is a huge problem, and in many ways makes the List feature less usable, simply because of the time it takes to organize your friends. You can add up to 1000 friends to each Facebook List.

Adding Existing Friends to a List

Sorry to say, there is no more convenient way to put existing friends into a list than this:

Go to http://www.facebook.com/friends

Add each friend to the list individually.

Here is a photo of the Friends page, and the List drop down box.

Click Pic for Larger Image

Adding New Friends to a List.

When you are making the Friend Request yourself, you can put the potential friend into a list like this:

Click for Larger Image

Since it’s so much trouble to add existing Friends to a list, it’s better to add people to the right list as soon as you add them to your Friend List. BUT! Here is the tricky part!!! You can’t accept friends the usual way if you want to add them to a list!!! If you want to get the option to add new Friend Requests to a List, you must accept them from the NOTIFICATIONS Link only–NOT the Friend Request link. (Crazy! Hey, nobody asked our opinion!!!)

DON’T ADD FRIENDS THIS WAY!!! (If you want to add them to a list.)

Click pic for larger image

ADD FRIENDS THIS WAY… (If you want to add them to a list)
[insert pic]

Want to target a status update to a particular list?
Once your lists are created and your friends are added to

Type your Status Update in the box.

Click the Padlock image next to the Share button.

Select on the drop down Customize.

Under Make this Visible select Specific People on the drop down.

Type in your List Name in the box.

Click Save Setting.

Click Share.

Your status will only be visible to the list you assigned to see it.

FAQS about Facebook Friend Lists

How many friends can I add to the Facebook List? You may add up to 1000 friends to each Facebook List.

How many Facebook Lists may I create?
There is a limit of 100 Facebook Friend Lists.

I need to manage my lists. Is there a page (other than the home page) where I can see all my lists? You can view and manage your lists from the Friends page: http://www.facebook.com/friends.

How do I delete a Friend List?

Tweet: Throwing Good Money After Bad – Lessons for Small Businesses, Start-Ups & Entrepreneurs by @dotJenna http://dld.bz/uaqP #entrepreneurs #in”

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a hundred times. A well-to-do, would-be entrepreneur desires to start a business, and throws money into the furnace of business expenses (especially marketing), only to lose every dime and end up broke, bitter and busted in the end. What’s the problem with these very smart, wealthy, incredible start-ups? Was it the economy? No. Was their idea off-base? No. Shall we blame their staff? No.

Then what?

Here’s my theory. I believe these otherwise successful small business hopefuls fall for the cognitive bias that money solves all problems. That issues can be resolved merely by spending more, more, more to get results. After all, money is the answer to everything, right? WRONG. They’re just “throwing good money after bad.”

It is an unfortunate human failing that a full pocketbook often groans more loudly than an empty stomach.
~ Franklin Delano Roosevelt

This is the case of having more money than is good for you (especially when it comes to starting a new venture). If you are over-capitalized, it lends to waste and overspending on things that need more of your attention, thought and concern. Not money.

NEWS FLASH: There are certain things that money can’t do!

Money cannot. . .

Build relationships with your target market.

Set the tone for your culture and brand identity.

Make you approachable and real to your target market.

Fuel your passion, or have compassion for those you serve.

Listen to the needs of your customers.

Watch for shifts and changes in sentiment and the marketplace.

Touch your customer’s senses.

Prove your loyalty to your customers.

Show others how much you care and what you’re willing to do to please them.

All of these things must be done from the heart–the heart of the entrepreneur. These issues take time, require working out, need attention. Your time, work and attention can never be substituted with a dollar bill. Nope. You’ve gotta roll up your sleeves.

Waste your money and you’re only out of money, but waste your time and you’ve lost a part of your life. ~ Michael Leboeuf

Important Lessons Unlearned

What’s worse is that the normal lessons learned in business are never learned when you try to get to the top using money and money alone. Buying expensive brochures, placing ungodly ads in trade publications, dressing up fancy trade show booths, hiring outrageously an expensive ad agency. All these expenses add up and they don’t necessarily add up to a successful business.

People with money to burn are missing the point, and they circumvent a million very important lessons of business, that are correctable. People with too much money to spare go into business putting money first, instead of their brains and hard-work, missing out on valuable lessons that would have eventually lead to the bulls eye.

Instead, a person who does this, “throwing good money after bad,” ends up feeling disgruntled and usually finds an external cause to blame for the failure, such as “the economy” or “I couldn’t use the term “designer” so no one hired me. The excuses for the failure are endless–but to the seasoned entrepreneur, the reason is obvious. This person threw logs on the fire before there was smoke coming from the pit.

The waste of money cures itself, for soon there is no more to waste.
~ M.W. Harrison

Having Too Much Money Can Make You Lazy

When you are overcapitalized, there is a tendency to be more comfortable and err, dare I say, lazy when it comes to operating and marketing your business. You tend to throw money at problems, thinking that money will solve it and you’ll be fine, but in truth, your merely throwing money into the furnace and watching it burn, delaying the inevitable failure sure to come.

Problems Must Be Solved Without Money First

A new business venture requires arduous work from start to finish. You can’t throw money at any part of it, and expect to see results. Everything must be considered, worked-through and figured out–WITHOUT A DIME–before you move forward with your plan. If you can’t make it with a tiny budget, then no amount of moola in the world will save you. So if, in your new venture, your problems require money to be solved, beware. Chances are you are throwing money to the wind without being certain that the funds will be returned. Solve your problems–all of them–without a dime first, then move to investing your valuable resources in the resolution, rather than the problem.

Money is neither my god nor my devil. It is a form of energy that tends to make us more of who we already are. . .
~ Dan Millman

I am sharing this article because I whole-heartedly agree with the concepts written in it, and I’m interested in exploring the implications of the generosity model in my for social media consulting practice.

Proof Positive in Generosity as a Business Model

One of the biggest aspects of web marketing is the concept of the Law of Reciprocity.

Here are the parts I like best about the article…

Our strongest drive is our drive to belong. From birth we are hardwired for attachment. Developmental psychologists have known for some time that we feel another’s pain through empathic distress. The neuropsychologists have joined the party by figuring out that we do this through mirror neurons. These little rascals fire up when we watch others engaging in a behavior and help make us feel like we are engaging too. Whether it’s a movie hero involved in an exciting car chase, a crying baby, or our favorite athlete making a great play, we feel their pain or their triumph. Mirror neurons activate our empathy, and in turn increase our selfhood.

This is important to understand when you’re marketing through social media, because you need to understand that people are open to engaging with you and sharing with you about the “stupid meal you had for dinner last night,” because they empathize, relate and bond with you.

The universal bond for this empathic distress is as primal as it gets: We are all going to die. We have empathy for each other because we’re not dead yet, and we need to celebrate being and flourishing while we can. If we repress our instinct for empathic distress, the underlying element in all that is good, we will devolve to manifesting secondary drives such as narcissism, materialism and aggression. Either we play nice or we destroy each other.

Why do I most often recommend Facebook to my consulting clients for locating and building relationships with key customers? Because that’s where your customers are hanging out! That’s right, unbeknownst to many small business owners and direct sales professionals, YOUR target market is camping out on Facebook, socializing, connecting, sharing and bonding with others faster than ever. Think of it. There are 500 Million people in the US, and 300 Million active Facebook users worldwide. This should tell us something alright. It tells us that most red-blooded Americans already have a Facebook account, and you will be surprised to learn that most users are affluent, urban and get this–even older than expected.

In fact, in many respects, the Facebook Fan page is surpassing the traffic of the actual company website. The reason? Because Facebook offers stickiness that is unavailable on other websites. There are more things to do on Facebook and more people to do them with. So, before I get into the solid facts about the great social networking Mac Daddy, let me give you a few of my opinions first.

Here’s why people hang out on Facebook

Their friends and family are on Facebook.

You can connect with people vertically and laterally on Facebook.

You can engage and interact with others at any time day or night.

You can share news and discuss events and post items for commentary.

You can broaden your social circle, and network for business.

You can learn a wealthy of info about your favorite topics.

You can meet like-minded people interested in the same things you are.

You can define yourself for your social circle with info, posts and photos.

People are using Facebook.

Facebook has more than 500 Million active users.

The chances of members of your target market being online are excellent.

People on Facebook use it every day.

50% of Facebook users login every day.

The average user spends over 55 minutes on Facebook each day.

People are not only on Facebook, but they USE Facebook.

There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages)

Average user creates 90 pieces of content each month.

More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month.

Thinking like a magazine editor when your posting on Facebook is only half the battle in the whole scope of marketing to your target market effectively online, but it's an important one. This will help to give you a frame-of-reference when deciding whether a post is relevant or not.

I regularly advise my small business clients to, “Think Like a Magazine Editor.” Yes, social media marketing requires more out of us than we ever had to do before, and wearing the hat of “writer,” let alone “editor” can be daunting. Nevertheless, it’s a requirement if we are to truly capture the attention of our target market and keep them captivated or “stuck” to us as a prized information resource online. You need to think of your Facebook and Twitter feeds as a type of mini-magazine.

Questions to Answer

Thinking like a magazine editor when your posting on Facebook is only half the battle in the whole scope of marketing to your target market effectively online, but it’s an important one. This will help to give you a frame-of-reference when deciding whether a post is relevant or not.

What is the theme of your magazine?

Who is your magazine geared toward?

What is the content of the magazine?

What do your magazine readers want to know?

What interests your readers?

What annoys your readers?

How often should you advertise?

What will you offer your readers to view today?

Are you posting theme-related items, or are you posting hodge-podge?

Are your posts geared toward the class and interests of your audience?

Characteristics of Magazine Content

Magazines are theme-oriented.

Each magazine caters to a very specific niche target market.

Magazines contain a variety of info types.

You find small segments for quick reading, photos and longer articles.

Lots of self-help tips, advice, solutions & Q&A.

Novelty items with fun-to-know facts related to niche.

Experts and relevant celebrities are consulted and fawned over.

Top-10 Lists.

Entertainment Reviews, Book Reviews, Music, etc…

Magazines contain a little of everything!

Photos, photos, photos & photos.

Ads are included, but do not (usually) overpower content.

Cartoons, Editorials, Opinions.

Magazines have a little bit of everything in them! Everything, that is, pertaining to a particular topic. When you read Car & Driver, for example, the reader expects to become more informed with the latest cars, equipment and performance tools. Magazines are fun, easy ways to become enthralled with your favorite topic. Your Facebook page should be the same way by providing content that intrigues your very best prospects, or whomever you’re trying to bring into your community.

I’m not suggesting that you take away the personal aspects of your Facebook posts, heavens no! The fact that you can be personable is a huge plus in the world of marketing, don’t throw that away. What I’m advising is that you write (or gather) and distribute among your community, great, interesting content that keeps them waiting for more in addition to all the other things I teach you to do. For more about content to post on Facebook, check out my 25% Rule for Facebook Marketing.

Your “Magazine” Brings Business

If you take this approach with your social media marketing on your blog and through your social media accounts such as Facebook, you will begin to create a loyal following of those who appreciate what you’re saying in no time. If you’ve done your home work, the people who will be in your network will be people who are also those in your “ideal client” category who will eventually trust you when it comes time to buy whatever it is that you or your business have to offer. This is the nature of social media marketing in a nutshell: Providing valuable information to those in your target market so that they will “stick” to you, trust you and buy from you.

Another neat thing about the Age of Social Media is that we can monitor what people are saying about our brands–and competitor’s brands as well. This is extremely cool, and something that would have been practically impossible to do just a few short years ago.

Social media monitoring tools allow you to monitor what the social scape is saying about your brand. There are some terrific, free tools on the market, and some others that charge a fee. This page will give you the latest I know about Social Media Monitoring Tools, as well as tips for monitoring your brand.

We are able to monitor Blogs, Web Pages, Forums, Facebook Fan Page Posts and Comments, Tweets and other user-generated content throughout the world wide web. How great it is to be a marketer on the world wide web. Speaking to Mark Borden, Editor of Fast Company Magazine, he told me of a story of the President of a very prestigious US Corporation who was able to respond to an outcry on Twitter immediately and resolve a potential disaster simply because his company was actively listening to what the market was saying. It’s mesmerizing to think that I can tweet about a problem with say, @Starbucks and receive a response the very next day. This kind real time customer service will be the hallmark of successful businesses of the future.

The Google Alert system was very helpful to me recently when I found a disparaging blog written about me. It was great to get the information and address it immediately. So great, in fact, it ended up getting my article “answer” tweeted by Guy Kawasaki. There is power in listening to the Socialverse.

You not only want to listen to your own brand’s signal, but also to that of keywords pertaining to what you do, competitors and other items that make a difference in your business. You can learn valuable information for your efforts, stuff you would never have grasped in the past is available for the avid listener online.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts monitor the news, blog posts, images and video.

Social Mention

Social Mention offers a real-time buzz widget that you can add to your website to show the world what’s being said about your brand, or event or your industry. This nifty, free site monitors blogs, networks, microblogs, bookmarks and more.

Social Mention monitors the following:

Strength: The likelihood that your brand is being discussed in social media.
Sentiment: The ratio of positive to negative comments.
Passion : Measure of people who talk about your brand, do so repeatedly.
Reach: Reach is the measure of the range of influence.

Also tells top keywords, top users and top hashtags. Social Mention also allows you to set-up email alerts for reviewing once per day about any keyword phrase you wish. Listening to competitors is fabulous because you can see exactly what they’re up to, and follow them or determine their marketing strategy based on their social media involvement. For some companies, it can be akin to seeing behind enemy lines.

It will also give you ideas of what others are doing in the world of social media so you can decide if that is something that you want to do as well. When doing a search in Social Mention, or other alert type social monitoring tools, use quotation marks to prevent getting unwanted results.

BoardTracker

Board Tracker tracks conversations on forums and discussion boards. According to their website, this social monitoring tool allows you to, “Identify trends and track competitors to stay ahead of the game. Measure effectiveness of your marketing and social media campaigns over time.” You can also, “discover the influencers, monitor and protect your brand and reputation, find and engage your customers and critics. It offers social media metrics with detailed graphs and advanced analytics based on quality data.” Board Tracker also “Advanced alerts & tracking options with alerts by email, twitter, sms, rss.. get that important message wherever you are!”

I find that Board Tracker is a handy tool for finding forums that are actively discussing keywords relative to the small business, real estate and legal industries. This tool offers a wealth of information that you can’t get from the other tools which don’t focus on discussion boards.

Here’s a full list of Free Social Media Monitoring Tools by Steve Farnsworth.
