This should give you a good base of knowledge if you’re interested in doing Graphic Design, Web Design, Web Development and/or Social Media Marketing. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to leave them in the comments section of this blog post article. Every question will be addressed and personally answered by yours truly. Enjoy!

Pixels: Everything in the web is measured by PIXELS, not inches, like it would be for print design. For more info on Pixels, check out this wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel

Web Safe Colors: Color is a very complex issue in design. Each medium needs a different set of color rules. There are RGB Colors which are for digital printing, and there is CMYK which is for 4 color print processing. There are only so many colors that are used for the web, and we call these “Web Safe Colors.”

Web Safe Colors are determined by a 6 digit number with a # sign in front of it.

Example:

#ffffff white
#cccccc gray
#000000 black

On the web, you must use these Web Safe Colors to get your colors to show up correctly. Here is a Web Safe Color Chart.

Basic Tools

Every web graphic designer, marketer and webmaster needs the following basic tools to his or her aesthetic job effectively:

Photoshop
Photoshop is where you create and prepare your images for the web. It has many features that help make designing for the web easier, the best of which is its ability to convert large photos and graphics into small, web-sized items that download more quickly. Illustrator is also helpful, but I use it once per 100 Photoshop uses.

File Naming

It’s important to use standard file naming practices. Here are rules you should incorporate:

1. Use all lower case. This is how the web code is rendered and is a good standard overall.

2. Use hyphens instead of spaces. This helps for SEO. Google cannot read images that have spaces in them for proper search engine indexing.
