Self Disclosure Leads to Social Attraction

Relationships are spawning through social networks at lightening-speed. According to a recent article on Cyberpsychology.com, people create deeper bonds-faster on Facebook than face-to-face. The reason for this, scientists have discovered, is that “self disclosure leads to social attraction.” In other words, the more we share about our personal lives, the more people like us.

People are sharing a good deal of information about themselves on sites like Facebook, and this act of sharing causes others to bond quickly. It’s easier to share info about yourself on Facebook than in person because you don’t get the feedback that is apparent in person, such as body language or verbal cues. So, when you share info on Facebook, you can’t tell if people are laughing, smiling, approving or disapproving, so this causes us to share more than we would in person.

Facebook makes the bonding and friend making process more efficient by making it easier for us to share personal information, which leads to faster bonding. This is good news for marketers who wish to build their businesses around one-to-one selling through social networking. Not only can you locate your target market, but if you position your brand in a highly personable light, you can build stronger ties to individuals in your target market–faster than ever.
